four gates wine

I had bought the wines but I had no one to try them with, so when Eli and his friends said we are coming into the area, I told Benyo and we used it as a great opportunity to share some wines. There are also interesting wines below the wines of the year, think of them as runner-up wines of the year. The supreme bounty comes from the fact that Royal released the 2018 French wines a bit early! Yes, it is back!! I used the tasting to do an interesting side by side comparison of the 2007 Yarden Blanc de Blancs and the newly released 2007 Yarden Blanc de Blancs late disgorged. Sadly, Pinot Noir to me is one of those wines that is so badly mangled in the kosher wine world, that it is no shock that most kosher oenophiles, turn face when u say Pinot Noir. The new Chablis is also nice, as is the Shirah Whites. This is a wine that was produced by Ricardo Cotarella for his own usage and usually not commercially available, yet this one is and for the first time kosher. The wine is at a point in time where it is impressive and old world, but still gripping with tannin, still it is at peak. The nose on this wine is plum heaven, with crazy truffle, mushroom, and rich tart raspberry, followed by black fruit, and rich dirt. In my article on Bordeaux, I wrote about how to build a successful cellar, and recently, I have been enjoying some wonderfully aged Four Gates wines. In the end – for its sheer awesomeness it beat out a very crowded field. Almost every container is trapped as well. Drink until 2021. The Brobdingnagian was slightly riper and fruit-forward than the Four Gates, but both were quite enjoyable, with the Four Gates taking home the medal. Sure there have been crazy cult wines, like the 2005 and 2006 DRC wines, or some other such rarities. The KFWE/KFWV 2021 results are in – the glass is half-empty, sadly. 2015 Chateau Leoville Poyferre – Score: 95 As I will talk about in my year in review post, 2014 will come out as the best vintage for the past decade in France. WTG is out West in the Bay area for a long weekend.  My sister and her husband live out here in Menlo Park and my immediate family decided the Bay area in the Sunshine State is a good place for a family weekend gathering. I have written many times about Four Gates Winery and its winemaker/Vigneron Benyamin Cantz. The finish is long and lovely, with saline, mineral, tobacco, refined dark chocolate, and rich mushroom. The website includes a description and list of current releases. Overall, many of the French Champagnes that we have in kosher have been drink-now wines. The finish is long, green, and tobacco-laden, with leather, chocolate, tar, and rich roasted herbs. The rest of the wines are the normal suspects, but this year’s crop is a bit better than last year. I have enjoyed the 1996 and 1997 versions of Benyamin’s wines and it is because of his care and control that he has for his vineyard. Get a move on, there was not a huge production of this beauty! The mouth on this full bodied wine has evolved beautifully, showing still sweet herb, black pepper, but super balanced with great acidity, along with layers of concentrated blackberry, strawberry, and boysenberry all wrapped in rich earth, and toasted oak, with a plush and mouth draping velvet – so good! Today, sunday, Wine Tasting Guy needed a break from the family madness and wanted to put in some professional time.  I have heard very good things about the Santa Cruz Mountains based “Four Gates winery”.  Given its reasonable proximity to where I’m staying and the winemaker’s warm and gracious personality, I made the 50 minute drive down south to visit Benyomin at his winery. That was not MY choice. Overall, the wines were fun and quite enjoyable. As I stated in that article, Four Gates has been blessed with land and climate that gives Benyamin Cantz grapes that are dripping with acid and terroir. Drink until 2024. Nice! Americans have had success with Pinot – in California, Oregon, and Washington State. Teach your students to analyze literature like LitCharts does. We are blessed with a bounty of good wines – just not like a few years ago when that bounty included many 95 and 95+ scoring wines. You have a 2014 Four Gates Merlot, 2014 Four Gates Merlot, M.S.C., the 2014 Four Gates Cabernet Sauvignon, Monte Bello Ridge, Betchart Vineyard, and the 2014 Four Gates Frere Robaire. Red. The other wines, that he creates from other sources, are sometimes wonderful, like the 2010 Four Gates Syrah that I tasted recently, and I would have sworn it was a Rhone wine, crazy minerality, acid, and backbone, with fruit NOT taking center stage, though ever so evident, the way is meant to be! This is not the first time we have been spoiled by Benyo and his wonderful wines. I have immense faith in Benyo’s wines that are sourced from his vineyard and the Monte Bello Ridge vineyard. The best wine of the year, well that was easy, it is the 2015 Chateau Leoville Poyferre. If clicked they will throw a wine bottle at the bosses and if not will run away again. The finish is long and earthy, with foliage, green notes, anise, earth, leather, rich sweet milk chocolate, mushroom, and loads of forest floor. Congratulations to Herzog Winery and Royal Wines. If last year, I thought the roses were pure junk, this year, you can add another nail in the coffin of rose wines, IMHO. Drink up!!! This wine is 9 years old and it looks young. It needs to be a wine that is easily available, incredible in style and flavor, and it needs to be reasonable in price. Overall, the night was fine, it was just not at the level I had hoped for. To the French, Pinot Noir is called Burgundy – following the tradition of French wineries to name their wines after the region where the grapes are grown. WOW! Drink from 2023 to 2035, 2015 Chateau Lascombes – Score: 94. Thankfully, the task of culling the bounty of great wines to come to these top wines was more a task of removing then adding. The finish is long and green with focus and power, showing dark chocolate, foliage, with scraping mineral, graphite, and mounds of earth lingering long. This year I am adding the “wine of the year”, and “best wine of the year”. I did the cellophane wrap trick and it mostly worked. Not on account of the Pinot Noir grapes themselves, but rather on account of the pathetic state of kosher Pinot Noir wine on the market. That is a hotly debated subject, but IMHO, in the world of kosher wine, there were FAR more best wine options in the 2014 vintage than any other vintage in the past decade. Throw in the incredible number of kosher European wines that are coming to the USA and being sold in Europe and this was truly a year of bounty for European kosher wines. The mouth on this medium bodied wine is present, it shows a weight that is lovely and almost oily, with a beautiful texture, showing great acidity, lovely with nectarines, pink grapefruit, and hints of orange. This wine was very close to what we tasted from the barrel. What a nose, this wine is mostly Cabernet Sauvignon and a drop of merlot. Drink until 2022. However, the 2013 Eccelenza, Bianco Umbria and the 2018 Camuna White, High Vibes are dry wines, though the High Vibes is really tropical and ripe. They were, a 1997 Four Gates Pinot Noir and a 2005 Four gates Merlot. The mouth is rich and layered with an incredible finesse of perfection, richly extracted and incredible with rich mineral and saline that is so perfectly hedonistic it is impressive, with chocolate heaven, showing earth, loam, finesse, and elegance beyond explanation, showing soft yet focused with a tight-mouthfeel, with rich raspberry, blackberry, ripe plum, all focused and concentrated with perfection. The mouth on this medium bodied wine is beyond unique, it is layered, rich, and oily, almost unctuous, with sweet peach, apricot, ginger, pepper, cloves, and white cinnamon, with rich orange, mandarin, nectarines, all wrapped in a cocoon of funk, mineral, sweet yellow plum, and loads of roasted herb. The slowest releaser may well be Domaine Roses Camille. Cabernet Franc is a black-skinned French wine grape variety grown in most wine producing nations. 2015 Chateau Grand Puy Ducasse – Score: 94 Right now, the best bet is France and the USA, with a drop from Israel, and after that, we are on empty. Skyview WineSkyview wine is a great place to buy those medium to high priced, hard to find, kosher wines and spirits. You just need to click 4 at any point during the boss. However, over the past year, those have been covered, and they were a serious letdown. Other than maybe Yarden and Yatir (which are off my buying lists – other than their whites and bubblies), very few if any release wines later than Four Gates. The mouth on this full bodied wine is crazy, rich, layered, with layer after layer of concentrated fruit, nice extraction, and intense acidic, with tannin galore, perfectly balanced, with sweet red raspberry, plum, sweet currant, black forest berry, and dark cherry. The vineyard is situated on a south-facing slope surrounded by oak and redwood forest looking down the valley to the Pacific Ocean. Still, to taste them side by side, you could see the same style of the wine, but while the normal bottling was still showing very well, the newly disgorged wine was screaming in tart and very bright fruit. First, you have the 2016 Four Gates Cabernet Sauvignon, followed by an N.V. Four Gates Pinot Noir, 2016 Four Gates Merlot, and two 2019 Chardonnay wines, both under the Four gates label. The mouth on this medium-bodied wine is not overly extracted, but it is well extracted, with good mouth and fruit texture, with incredible acid, good fruit focus, showing dark cherry, plum, ripe and tart raspberry, strawberry, oak, vanilla, and garrigue, with green notes, and lovely mouth-draping tannin. The Best Wine of the year goes to a wine well worthy of the title. New in 2021 will be the 2018 Four Gates Negrette, a unique wine that was nice. Disclaimer – do not blame me for posting this AFTER Benyo sold his wines. What a wine, the nose on this thing is out of this world, so old school and old-world it is crazy. The mouth is full bodied and incredible with the same style as the Chevalier, but with more finesse, mouth coating soft tannin that is extracted with blue fruit, earth, rich concentration, with more saline and power, yet showing incredible precision that is coating and impressive. Another wine this year under the Ayala label is the NV Chardonnay, it is a nice wine that did not go through malolactic fermentation, so while it has creamy notes, the rich butter and butterscotch notes of previous chardonnays will not be found here. The nose on this wine is beautiful, showing classic notes of hay, straw, with fresh cut white flowers, citrus, lemongrass, more mineral, with hints of melon, and loam. The mouth is rich, incredible, massive, full-bodied and incredibly extracted with rich saline, with layers of unstoppable concentrated fruit, with blackberry, raspberry, with blueberry, rich spice, mushroom, and herb. This wine is a classic Benyo special, what a wine, this is crazy fun, what a rich floral, raspberry nose, with violets, rich tart fruit, with cherry, chocolate, mushroom, and foliage galore. I first (and I’m embarrassed to say, last) spoke to Benyomin when i had a wine making question related to my garage wine about 1 1/2 years ago.  Having never spoken to me before I called him (he lists his phone number on his website) the warm Benyomin spent 45 minutes on the phone with me helping me out with my problem. The Golden State Of Kosher Wine From huge operations to boutique wineries, some gems from California. The finish is tart, refreshing, lively, with acid madness, showing a style of sweet and tart fruit, and nice complexity. The mouth is old world, wow, give me a break, in ways the wine is crazy better than the Warneke (Special Edition), but with years the Warneke will pass it. Thank goodness Shirah is back with an exceptional 2018 Gruner Veltliner! Nice! Bravo! You know?…“.  Pinot is a complicated grape – but not to its own detriment.  Listen to Miles throughout Sideways and you may come to think that Pinot is fleeting, flinty, thin, and complicated. The 2015 reds are all poor quality and the whites are not much better, in 2015 and 2016. Super gracious cousins of ours put a bunch of us up in their spectacular Palo Alto home and the East Coast (parents & I), West Coast (sister & brother in law) & Israel based (brother, sister-in-law & niece) family members are all getting in some good family time.
